Derwent Art Prize 2022
Announces Shortlist and Exhibition
· The Derwent Art Prize 2022 received over 6,100 entries from 2,325 artists.
· Katy Hessel, Paul Hobson and Charmaine Watkiss shortlisted 72 works by 55 artists.
· Prizes totalling over £12,500 will be awarded at the Private View, on 23rd February.
· The exhibition will take place at gallery@oxo, London, from 24th February to 6th March.

Created in 2012 by Derwent, the Derwent Art Prize rewards excellence in contemporary graphic art by showcasing the very best artworks created in pencil.
Now in its 6th edition, the Derwent Art Prize invited artists from around the world to submit works created in 2D or 3D in any pencil including graphite, coloured pencil, water soluble, pastel and charcoal.
The Derwent Art Prize 2022 received a record number of submissions: over 6,100 entries by 2,325 artists from 43 countries.
All of the works were considered by a prestigious panel of selectors, Katy Hessel, host of The Great Women Artists podcast, Paul Hobson, Director of Modern Art Oxford, and Charmaine Watkiss, artist.
After careful consideration, the three selectors shortlisted 72 works by 55 artists for the Derwent Art Prize 2022 exhibition.
The 72 shortlisted artworks will be available to see in the Derwent Art Prize 2022 exhibition, at gallery@oxo, OXO Tower Wharf, in London, from 24th February to 6th March 2022.
All of the shortlisted artists will be eligible to win prizes totalling over £12,500, including:
· First Prize: £4,000 plus a year’s supply of Derwent products
· Second Prize: £2,000 and a box of Derwent Lightfast Pencils
· Young Artist First Prize: £4,000
· Young Artist Second Prize: £2,000
· People’s Choice Award: £500
The award-winners will be announced during the Private View and Prize Giving on Wednesday 23rd February 2022.
The exhibition will then open to the public from 24th February to 6th March 2022.

· Katy Hessel, art historian, broadcaster and curator: Katy writes and hosts the weekly podcast The Great Women Artists. Featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in Art & Culture, Katy has presented films for BBC, Tate, Royal Academy, Barbican, Sotheby's, Hauser & Wirth; interviewed the likes of Zadie Smith, Ali Smith, Olivia Laing, Lubaina Himid, Tracey Emin, Frances Morris, Judy Chicago; and curated exhibitions at Victoria Miro and Timothy Taylor.
· Paul Hobson, Director of Modern Art Oxford: Paul Hobson read History at Oxford University and completed post-graduate studies in aesthetics and contemporary visual theory. Working for more than twenty years in the art world, Paul has been the Director of Modern Art Oxford since September 2013, following senior roles at the Contemporary Art Society, The Showroom, Serpentine Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts in London.
· Charmaine Watkiss, artist: Born in London to Jamaican parents, Charmaine Watkiss dedicates her practice to stories connected to the African Caribbean diaspora. Drawing is central to her practice, and pencil and paper are her materials of choice. Recent group exhibitions include the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2022, the Drawing Biennial 2021, Breakfast Under The Tree, curated by Russell Tovey at Carl Freedman Gallery in 2021, and the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2019.

Derwent Art Prize
Created in 2012 by fine art brand Derwent, the Derwent Art Prize is a global art competition and exhibition.
